A 27-year-old Joliet man was shot in the head and killed on South Ottawa Street early Sunday, police said.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, officers heard multiple gunshots fired to the southeast of their location near Des Plaines and DeKalb streets, Joliet police said in a news release.
The officers headed there and police dispatch received a call of a person shot on South Ottawa between McDonough and Wallace streets. The officers located the wounded man, identified as Eugene Holmes, inside a residence and began to administer aid until fire department paramedics arrived, police said.
"The paramedics arrived on scene but were unfortunately unable to revive the victim and he succumbed to his injuries," police said.
Other people were also in the residence with Holmes at the time of the shooting but were not injured, according to police.
"The early stages of the investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle pulled up near the residence," police said. "Several people exited the vehicle and shot up the residence multiple times. The victim was struck by the gunfire."
The Ottawa Street shooting was the city's third gun attack in less than three days.
On Thursday night, 13-year-old Dirksen Junior High School student Javier Cayetano was shot to death and two other 13-year-olds were wounded near the corner of Morgan and May streets, the mother of one of their friends said they were walking home.
Then, on Friday evening, two men, ages 20 and 30, were shot while sitting in a car parked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Union Street. They were wounded but survived.
