SYCAMORE – A Cortland man accused of threatening to kill his ex-wife in the parking lot of her workplace, breaking into her car, then dragging employees who came to her aid around the lot, will stay in the DeKalb County Jail until at least Monday.
John R. Anderson, 36, of the 100 block of West Carol Avenue, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence and aggravated stalking, among other charges. If convicted on the DUI charge, because he’s got two previous such convictions, he could face six to 30 years in prison.
Police said in court records that they responded about 7 a.m. Tuesday to the parking lot of Panduit, 1700 Fairview Drive, where Anderson showed up and threatened to kill the woman and broke a handle off a door on the 2005 Chevrolet.
He managed to get in the back seat, at which point she fled, and he took control of the car and squealed the tires as he tried to chase her down, the records show. Two employees tried to stop him and at one point were hanging out of the car’s doors, the records show, but they eventually managed to take the keys away and restrain him.
Judge Philip Montgomery granted Assistant State’s Attorney Alesandra Friend’s request that Anderson not be allowed to post any bail until the case is heard at 9 a.m. Monday.
The records show Anderson and the woman dated in Arkansas, that she moved to Illinois to get away from him and that she claims he’s strangled her at least 10 times. The records add that he’d cut off his electronic home monitoring bracelet in order to attack her Tuesday morning, and that he admitted to police he’d been drinking and doing cocaine all night before the incident.
