MORRIS – Morris is now home to a frozen yogurt and bubble tea shop.
Everest Frozen Yogurt and Bubble Tea opened at 2417 Sycamore Drive, near where the Secretary of State facility used to be located before its recent move.
Owner Ahmed Qureshi is not new to Morris, however. He has operated Vapor Tobacco and Cigars on the other side of Division Street for eight years. He said that while spending time in Morris, he saw an opportunity for another type of business.
“There are a lot of young kids in town,” he said. He said he has two daughters and knew what they liked.
The yogurt side of the business allows for self-serve frozen yogurt and candy mix-ins.
Bubble tea was something Qureshi said he has long enjoyed. When he was a student at Northeastern University, he used to frequent a bubble tea store near campus.
Bubble tea is a flavored tea that includes tapioca pearls. Qureshi said the name bubble tea comes from the bubbles that form on top while making the tea. The tea is served with larger-than-normal straws, allowing the tapioca pearls to come through as well.
When Qureshi went before the Morris City Council for his license in 2018, there was a brief pause in the meeting for aldermen to do some research into what exactly bubble tea is.
When he was planning his yogurt shop, Qureshi decided to include the bubble tea as well, thinking the combination would work well
He found a supplier and has made some of his own recipes, including recipes for various types of smoothies.
Most of the smoothies are made with with real fruit, Qureshi said.
“People love that idea,” he said.
Qureshi said he lives in Naperville, but enjoys doing business in Morris.
“This town has potential,” he said.
