Woman accused of posing as real estate agent, pocketing deposits

SYCAMORE – A Crest Hill woman accused of duping two women into paying her $350 to sublease a DeKalb apartment she had no right to is free on her signature.

Shekia L. Robertson, 22, whose last listed address in court records is in the 2200 block of Jasmine Circle Drive, has been charged with two counts of theft by deception. If convicted, she could face two to five years in prison.

Police say in court records that on April 17, 2018, Robertson pretended to be a real estate agent on Facebook Marketplace and met with two women who paid her to sublease an apartment in the 800 block of Fotis Drive.

The records show she met one woman at the apartment at 11 a.m., then went with her to Walmart, where they had duplicate keys made and $345 was paid in cash before Robertson dropped off the grid altogether; the victim was blocked on Facebook, Robertson’s phone was disconnected, and she didn’t respond to emails.

The second victim paid Robertson $350 about 3:30 in the afternoon, and police say in court records she agreed to meet at the police department and pay back the money, but never showed.

DeKalb Police Cmdr. Bob Redel said Chicago officers arrested Robertson sometime between March 9 and when she was at her bond hearing Saturday morning.

DeKalb County Judge Bradley Waller released Robertson on her signature, and she’s due back in court at 9 a.m. May 3.
