Michael Huebsch

JOHNSTON, IOWA – Michael Huebsch, 64, died April 1, 2019, in Johnston, Iowa.

He was born March 18, 1955, to Michael and Loreta Huebsch in Sterling, IL (where he would reside through his graduation from high school). Mike graduated from the University of Iowa, and although always loyal to the Hawks, he cheered for Kansas and Iowa State with the same enthusiasm. Fresh out of school, Mike worked for Becton Dickinson in Columbus, Nebraska. He moved his family back to Iowa and briefly worked for Firestone before taking a position in the ever-changing organization (now Bemis) where he remained for over 30 years.

He was a kind, dedicated, and loyal man who found great satisfaction in spending quality time with friends and family. He loved his grandchildren and, with a prideful smile, spoke of them often. At every family gathering he could be seen playing with them on the floor. He was affectionately called the “baby whisperer” by family and friends. Mike had an uncanny ability to help any baby drift off to sleep with his calm demeanor and perpetually warm hands.

He was a humble man who didn’t care to standout but thoroughly appreciated being around people who did. His infectious laugh always followed a well-timed joke or sarcastic quip; he was also very quick to laugh at himself and to encourage others to do the same. For leisure, he greatly enjoyed golfing, competitive napping, and reading thrillers; but he was most at peace on Leech Lake with a line in the water.

Mike had a generous, genuine soul, an old-school work ethic, and a love of living life with his wife, Amy. They enjoyed season tickets to Des Moines Performing Arts and looked forward to vacations together. They were each other’s person.

Those left to honor his memory are his mother, Loreta (Joe) Anning; his wife, Amy Nigg; his sisters, Patricia (Nyle) Anderson and Christy (Kevin) Kelley; his son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Kelsey Huebsch; his daughters, Emily and Elizabeth Huebsch; and five grandchildren, Charlotte, Eleanora, Hayes, Michael, and Emilia. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Huebsch, and the mother of his children, Amy Schuler.

A visitation will be on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Iles Funeral Home (6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines).
Memorials may be made to the family, which will later be used to purchase a memorial bench along Mike's favorite walking trail.
