Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s office hosts Service Academy Day in DeKalb

DeKALB – Congressman Adam Kinzinger’s office is hosting a service academy information session Saturday at Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center.

The event is from 9 a.m. to noon in the Sky Room and is free and open for students, parents, teachers and school counselors interested in learning more about U.S. military academies, the requirements for admission and the congressional nomination process.

Academy representatives and Kinzinger's staff will be on hand to answer questions.
In order for a student to be considered for admission to a service academy, he or she must receive a nomination from either their congressman, senator or the vice president. Potential nominees are evaluated based on their application, test scores, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation and the specific requirements for each service academy.

After nominations are submitted by Kinzinger, each service academy selects which students will receive appointments to attend their institution. Attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Kinzinger encourages students in the district who are interested to attend.
"Even if you're unsure, this event will help answer any questions you have now or might have as you start the application process," said Kinzinger, an Air Force veteran.
