A 32-year-old man who was released from prison in October and reportedly struggles with mental health issues was charged Wednesday in connection with a Sleepy Hollow home invasion.
Fabian J. Torres has been in police custody since Monday, but authorities have not officially announced charges against the man, who was released from Jacksonville Correctional Center on parole late last year.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Department had been housing Torres on an “investigative hold” but updated its website Wednesday evening to reflect that Torres now faces a home invasion charge with use of force or weapon.
A judge will set Torres’ bond in Kane County Court on Thursday morning, jail records show.
Officers apprehended Torres after receiving a report of a home invasion, sexual assault and two stabbings Monday at a Sleepy Hollow home. McHenry County court documents cite Torres as living in the 900 block of Saratoga Parkway, Sleepy Hollow, where the alleged stabbings occurred.
Kane County State’s Attorney Joseph McMahon and Sleepy Hollow Police Chief James Linane also are expected to host a joint news conference Thursday.
The news conference will be held in the grand jury room on the third floor of the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, St. Charles Township, after a morning bond court hearing.
The event will take place at 9 a.m., or immediately following the 8:30 a.m. bond court hearing in Courtroom 005, according to a news release from the state’s attorney’s office sent on Wednesday.
Linane has said a suspect entered a home in that area through an unlocked front door before allegedly sexually assaulting and stabbing a 19-year-old woman. The woman’s 17-year-old brother, who came to his sister’s defense, also was stabbed. Both escaped the house and notified neighbors. An update on their conditions was not immediately available Wednesday night.
Torres has a history of mental illness and previously served time in prison for throwing a Molotov cocktail into a crowded Algonquin grocery store in 2011.
It’s unclear whether Torres has hired an attorney to represent him on the most recent charge.
