DeKalb School District 428 administrators set to receive pay raises

humbs up gives Cortland new assistant principal

DeKALB – DeKalb High School’s dean of students, Maurice McDavid, could be the new assistant principal at Cortland Elementary School beginning July 1.

The DeKalb School District 428 Board will vote Tuesday whether to bring McDavid – the husband of board member-elect Samantha McDavid, who earned the second-highest vote tally in the April 2 election – into the Cortland assistant principal role from July 1 to June 30, 2020. He would get an annual salary of $75,500, as well as retirement and health benefits through the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System and the Teacher Health Insurance Security Fund.

The board and Maurice McDavid also may mutually agree to extend his employment contract after June 30 for a one-year period, according to the meeting agenda.

His duties will include supervising attendance centers, overseeing personnel, and instructional and administrative leadership at Cortland Elementary.

District 428 Superintendent Jamie Craven said the district hires assistant principals on a 200-day basis, but it is not an interim position.

“McDavid will finish the year at DHS,” Craven said Friday. “The DHS dean of students position for next year has been posted and will be filled this spring.”

The board also will vote on pay raises for other administrators Tuesday.

Craven is up for a 2% raise effective July 1, which is intended to reflect a cost-of-living adjustment, according to the agenda. The increase would raise Craven’s base salary to $202,000, not to exceed $207,000.

District 428 finance and business director Cynthia Carpenter is set to get an updated employment contract, with an annual salary of $154,000 and a 6% salary increase until 2023, at which time Carpenter has stated her intent to retire, the agenda shows. At the time of her retirement, Carpenter’s salary will be $183,600.

Elementary curriculum coordinator Kimberly Lyle also has announced her plans to retire, according to the agenda. Her employment contract will be terminated June 30, 2023. Her salary for the 2019-20 school year is set at $106,200 with a 6% increase until her retirement.
