SUGAR GROVE – Martin Jasso has worked in restaurants all his life and finally is realizing his dream of creating his own eatery.
“I just decided I wanted to do my own,” said Jasso.
Jasso opened the Sugar Grove Café, a lunch, breakfast and dinner restaurant at 1942 U. S. Highway Rt. 30, on April 22.
“I’m very excited,” said Jasso, whose family operates Briana’s Pancake House in Batavia.
Jasso was working on the finishing touches to the Sugar Grove café’s newly remodeled interior the week before opening day.
Jasso is optimistic that his restaurant will be successful because he is focusing on Mexican cuisine, a specialty not found elsewhere nearby, he said.
Sugar Grove also needs a “breakfast place,” Jasso said.
In the past, a series of restaurants operated at the site without long-term success including Runway to Galway and most recently, Roundup Sports Bar and Grill, which closed in late 2016.
Jasso started leasing the vacant Sugar Grove restaurant space last November. Since then, he’s improved the exterior by adding new signs and a west entryway and resurfacing the parking lot.
Inside, Jasso replaced the former high tables with standard-height dining tables and booths, and remodeled the kitchen and bar.
Building owner Steve Fulton has been involved in the renovation project to ensure its success, village officials said.
The new café’s menu will feature a variety of Mexican favorites such as tamales, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas and nachos, along with margaritas by the pitcher or glass.
Every Friday evening, Jasso plans to offer a fish fry with seafood such as jumbo shrimp.
The village granted a liquor license for the business on April 16.
Sugar Grove Café hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday (serving breakfast and lunch), and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (serving breakfast, lunch and dinner).
