Name: Alex Wooten
School: St. Charles East, senior
Sport: Softball
Why she was selected: Wooten hit two home runs, and almost had a third on a deep fly that hit the scoreboard – ruled a double – during the Saints victory over Wheaton North. She also drove in three runs in a win over St. Charles North.
Wooten, in her second year on varsity, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson to discuss her season and more. Below is an edited transcript.
Bartelson: Have you ever had such a great day at the plate like that?
Wooten: This year was actually my first home run; I [technically] hit two more after it...getting three in a game was ridiculous. I was so excited; I just wanted to support my team.
Bartelson: Is hitting for power part of your normal game or something that's just developed from the last year or so?
Wooten: It's definitely been developed. Last year, I wanted to hit for power and I really wanted to get some home runs in, but I ended up being a contact hitter so I got on base a lot. This year, my focus was power...it's working a lot because I've been getting the home runs.
Bartelson: As a senior, how do you embrace being a team leader and that type of a role?
Wooten: I'm a very happy person and optimistic, so I want everyone to be really happy and just have a good day on and off the field. I just try and bring that to the team, and focus on [positive] things and don't worry about the negative things.
Bartelson: How much are you looking forward to attending Wisconsin-Parkside in the future?
Wooten: I'm very excited. I met my roommate [Yorkville softball player Danielle Evans] already in December...I'm just excited for a new environment and Wisconsin because it's going to be completely different than St. Charles.
