Roundup: Wyatt Murphy has three hits for Sandwich in loss to Reed-Custer

BASEBALL

Sandwich: Wyatt Murphy had three hits and Jackson Murphy two hits for Sandwich (10-13) in a 7-3 loss to Reed-Custer on Saturday. Sean Smith struck out four over three innings on the mound. John Kruswicki, Wyatt Murphy and Jackson Murphy each had two hits for the Indians in a 7-3 loss to Peotone on Friday. Jackson Murphy had two hits and two RBIs and Andrew Gipe struck out nine over five innings for Sandwich in a 6-3 loss to Manteno on May 8.

SOFTBALL

Sandwich: Olive Tornga had two hits and two RBIs and Grace Schmidt also had two hits and walked twice for the Indians (9-14) in an 11-5 loss to LaSalle-Peru on Monday. Sandwich scored two runs in the first to get out to a 2-0 lead, and two more in the seventh in a late rally.

“We were shut down for the middle innings while LP continued to string consistent hits together,” Sandwich coach Mattie McGuire said. “We finally answered back in the seventh inning down to the last out. “

Schmidt struck out seven and Paige Sartori had two hits and two RBIs for the Indians in a 7-3 loss to Peotone on Friday.

Schmidt struck out nine for Sandwich in a 3-2 loss to Plano on May 8.

“We are very pleased with our performance after not playing a game for so long because of rainouts,” McGuire said. Our intensity throughout the whole game was high and positive, we made very few defensive errors, and Grace Schmidt pitched a great seven innings after returning from an injury.”
