Police: Plainfield man caught with concealed handgun

A Plainfield man was arrested after an officer spotted a pistol protruding from his waistband, police said.

Patrick Allen, 36, of the 2200 block of Stonehaven Drive was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by an Aurora police sergeant about
2 a.m. Sunday when he noticed the car was driving on just the rim of one of its wheels, according to an Aurora police news release.

The car was stopped at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and East New York Street in Aurora, police said.

The car was driven by Allen’s wife, who told the officer that she and her husband were leaving a party in Aurora and were trying to get to a friend’s house to repair the vehicle, police said.

Allen exited the car to examine the damage to the vehicle, police said. Other officers who were called to the scene as backup noticed a handgun protruding from his waistband when he stepped out of the car, police said.

The gun was a loaded Ruger LCP .380-caliber pistol, police said.

The officers retrieved the gun from Allen and took him into custody because even though he possessed a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, he did not have a concealed carry permit, police said.

“Allen explained to the officers that he ‘had forgotten that [he] went shooting earlier in the day,’ ” police said.

Allen was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was taken to the Kane County jail.

Allen is scheduled to appear for a status hearing June 28 at the Kane County courthouse.
