Officials: Woman in critical condition after Marengo-area crash

A 76-year-old Naperville woman remained in critical condition Wednesday night after a crash in Marengo when her 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was struck by a garbage truck, McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers said.

The woman, the only occupant in the vehicle, was flown by Flight for Life to Javon Bea Hospital on Riverside Road in Rockford.

The area near Route 176 between Millstream Road and Deerpath Trail opened about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday after being closed for several hours. Should drivers head that way, they are asked to use caution while debris is cleared.

Emergency crews responded to reports of the crash at 3:43 p.m. Wednesday.

For unknown reasons, the woman who was going north on Dunham Road did not yield at the stop sign and drove into traffic. The 2017 Autocar garbage truck driven by a 45-year-old Union man was going west on Route 176 when he struck the Subaru vehicle on the passenger side. He did not have a stop sign, Rogers said.

Both vehicles continued to travel northwest off the road, both hitting a guardrail and each hitting a tree.

Marengo Fire and Rescue Capt. Mark Pankow said the driver of the garbage truck, the sole occupant, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley with minor injuries.

Other departments responding to the scene included McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Union Fire Department.
