Illinois State Police District 5 headquarters in Lockport will be temporarily closed as asbestos is removed from the building.
State police officials announced in a news release Thursday the temporary closing of their Lockport headquarters, located at 16648 Broadway St., to address environmental concerns and ensure necessary maintenance. The maintenance will consist of removing asbestos from the building, which was found when crews attempted to eradicate mold that had developed as a result of local flooding.
ISP District 5 will continue to address any needs during the temporary closure. Residents should call 815-726-6377 to be connected with ISP personnel and report an incident.
The emergency red phone is still in use at the front door of the District 5 building, which connects to ISP telecommunications.
The ISP and the Illinois Department of Central Management Services are working together on the project.
The ISP is also currently planning a multi-purpose building that will include District 5 headquarters, a Forensic Science Laboratory and possibly other work units within Will County, the release said.
