Troy Shorewood Elementary School held 'Annual Showcase of the Arts'

Several artists recently performed and demonstrated their talents to the students of Troy Shorewood Elementary School during the school’s“14th Annual Showcase of the Arts.”

The showcase was a three-day event that brought in artists involved in musical theatre, jewelry, pottery, scientific drawing, violin, piano and even video game design.

Performances included those by the University of St. Francis Schola Cantorum, the Joliet Junior College jazz band and local band Shindig, of which Troy Shorewood nurse Sharman Strode was lead singer.

Troy Shorewood visual art teacher Taryn Moraga said Showcase of the Arts is a life-changing event for many of the school’s students, as they are exposed to several different forms of art presented in a variety of ways.

Artists presented in individual classrooms during afternoon and evening performances, gave demonstrations, allowed students to create their own pieces of artwork, and presented PowerPoint demonstrations of them in their studios or working on their art.

Artists included Booker Washington (cello, video game design), Joanna Patterson (sun prints), Hannah Babyak (musical theater), Cindy Sing (Cynthia’s Bling Jewelry), Casey McGrath and Ben Keene (violin), Reese Collins (DJ), Sue Waegner (scientific drawing) and Chris Paulus (piano).
