Charles W. Scriven

DIXON – Charles W. Scriven, 78, of Dixon died Monday, July 29, 2019, at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

He was born March 30, 1941, in Dixon the son of John and Marie (Kreger) Scriven. He was a graduate of Rockford Business College. From paperboy to publisher, he spent the majority of his career with Shaw Newspapers, before working for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office until retirement. He was a member of the Dixon Elks Lodge 779 and a fourth degree member of Dixon Knights of Columbus Council 690. Chuck was chairman of the Lee County Republican Central Committee for around 20 years. He was instrumental in bringing the Correctional Center to Dixon, taking a delegation from town to President Ronald Reagan’s first inauguration, and organizing Reagan’s 75th birthday celebration in Dixon. Chuck served on the Illinois Tollway Authority Board and was recently serving on the Dixon Plan Commission.

For many years he played and coached on the Dixon Softball League for the team sponsored by the New Bridge Inn. Chuck married Kathleen Musser on May 29, 1971, in Dixon. Together they enjoyed more than 48 years of marriage; full of friends, family, and travel, including unforgettable trips to Florida, Hawaii, and  Ireland. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children, Juli (Kevin) Stefanczyk of Fitchburg, WI, Emily Scriven of Arlington Heights, IL, Elizabeth Scriven of Dixon; grandchildren, Joseph and Kylie Stefanczyk, and Lucia and Alexander Scriven. He is also survived by two sisters, Carol Scriven of Texas and Mary Lou (Thomas) Burkardt of Dixon; nieces and nephews, John, Anthony, Mark, Michelle, Arianne and Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Thomas Scriven.

A man of politics and principle, humor and heart, Chuck loved golf and bowling, the White Sox and a dry martini. He was quick with a handshake or a story, especially after a dry martini. He will be missed by many, the friends who he met for coffee and cards, his wife who he adored, his grandchildren who he loved, and his children who he tolerated.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Cremation rites will follow. Memorials have been established to the American Heart Association and the Diabetes Foundation.
