STERLING – Joseph Lewandowski, 94, of Sterling died Saturday, August 3, 2019, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
Joseph was born May 6, 1925, in Oregon, the son of John and Katherine (Gritzko) Lewandowski. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1943 and served in the US Army Air Corps. during World War II from 1943 to 1945. Joseph was a second lieutenant bombardier and navigator.
He married Suzanne F. McFadden on September 4, 1946, in Sterling. She preceded him in death on February 6, 2006. He was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire as a machinist for 25 years, retiring May 1, 1987. Joseph was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include four daughters, Kate (Vinnie) Deschamps of Cave Junction, Ore., Mary (Eddie) Tutterrow of Rock Falls, Margie Martens of O’Fallon, Mo. and Judy (Terry) Hammett of Sterling; four sons, Joseph (Sue) Lewandowski of Nelson, John (Judy) Lewandowski of Theodore, Ala., Thomas (Tammy) Lewandowski of Bonita Springs, Fla. and Kazimir (Danella) Lewandowski of Sterling; 16 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and one son, Frank Lewandowski; one grandson, Thomas Lewandowski Jr.; and ten brothers and sisters.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, August 10, 2019, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the St. Mary Parish Center Chapel in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial with military honors will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the chapel with The Very Reverend James R. Keenan officiating. Burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.
