Storm rises against Lady Bruins

Bureau Valley rose to the challenge in its first conference match of the season, rallying to defeat St. Bede at the Storm Cellar Tuesday night.

The Lady Bruins took the first set 25-23 only to have the Storm rally for 25-21 and 25-17 victories.

Kamryn Kolb (2 blocks), Molly Bohm and Sam Bohm (2 blocks) each had eight kills for the Storm (9-5, 1-0). Other leading contributors for BV were Lauren Wirth (5 points, 27 assists, 5 kills, 14 digs, 2 aces), Carly Konneck (9 points, 6 kills, 11 digs, 2 aces), Makanna Sabin (17 digs) and Jenna Nordstrom (8 points, 12 digs).

Leaders for St. Bede (6-3, 1-1) were Elaina Wamhoff (9 points, 2 aces, 3 kills, 2 blocks, 21 assists, 16 digs), Reese Ludford (6 points, 7 kills, 9 digs) and Marissa Boehm (6 points, 5 kills, 3 blocks, 5 digs).

Bureau Valley 2, Erie-Prophetstown 1: The Storm came back Thursday to defeat the Lady Panthers 25-18, 26-28, 25-21 at Prophetstown. Wirth had 28 assists with eight digs and nine points (2 aces), Konneck had seven kills and 20 digs, Sabin 24 digs and six points, and Nordstrom eight digs and 15 points.

Newman 2, St. Bede 0: The Lady Bruins fell in TRAC East play Thursday at the academy, 14-25, 18-25. Reese Ludford led the Lady Bruins with seven kills, and Wamhoff added 14 assists.

Princeton 2, Kewanee 0: The Tigresses made quick work of the Boiler Girls Thursday, wrapping up a 25-14, 25-13 win at Prouty Gym. Kenzie Coleman had seven kills and eight points, and Katie Bates added 15 assists, eight points and three aces for PHS (6-3, 4-0).

Newark 2, LaMoille-Ohio 0: The Norsemen claimed twin wins of 25-8 in Little Ten Conference play at LaMoille Thursday. Collette Motter had 10 digs in defeat for the Lady Lions.

Mendota 2, Hall 0: The Spikers used a pair of 25-15 sets to defeat the Lady Devils at Mendota Thursday. Zoey Morris had four kills, and Maddie Hultz and Hannah Parente each had six digs for Hall.

Cross country

At Kewanee: Princeton defeated Fieldcrest 25-54 with neither host Kewanee or St. Bede fielding full girls squads Tuesday. PHS’ Elizabeth Orwig (22:56) and Lexi Bohms (24:03) finished 1-2 with St. Bede’s Brady Mudge (24:05) third.

The boys meet went to Fieldcrest (23), which claimed the top three places, followed by St. Bede (57), Princeton (66) and Kewanee (71). Luke Peacock (19:36) placed fourth to lead PHS with Anthony Hernandez (19:59) running fifth for St. Bede.

Girls golf

At El Paso: Ally Mendoza had a 48 and Alyssa Heitz a 49 for St. Bede (207), which lost to host El Paso-Gridley (197) and Pontiac (204) Tuesday at the El Paso Golf Club.

At Rock Falls: Bureau Valley (229) took on host Rock Falls (194) and Lena-Winslow Pearl City (224) Wednesday at Rock River Golf and Pool. For BV, Elisabeth Sullivan had a 53, Paige Twidell a 54, Regan Cook a 58, Amelia Lind a 64 and Lily Pickard a 68.

At Sheffield: Senior Izzi Hall matched her career best of 46, Olivia Gartin had a 49, Brynn Hieronymus a 54 and Ashton Wilson a 60 as Princeton (209) defeated host Bureau Valley (225) at Hidden Lake Golf Club Thursday.

Twidell had a 49 and Sullivan a 52 for the Storm.

Boys golf

At Port Byron: Host Riverdale (149) defeated St. Bede (184) and Bureau Valley (206) in a Three Rivers triangular at Byron Hills Golf Course Thursday. Nathan Potthoff topped the Bruins at 42 while Trent DeVenney led the Storm with a 37.
