SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man wanted by local and federal authorities was arrested Monday afternoon after a foot chase, according to DeKalb County court records.
Jonathan A. Arellano, 22, of the
1100 block of Rushmoore Drive, is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of a police officer and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
DeKalb police stopped Arellano as he was walking near the intersection of West Hillcrest Drive and Normal Road because he matched the description of someone suspected of being in possession of stolen property – that of a man wearing a gray sweatshirt.
Arellano gave an officer his name but ran away, as the officer radioed the information to dispatch, according to court documents, ignoring commands to stop.
Police caught up to Arellano in a backyard in the 700 block of West Hillcrest, according to court documents. During a search, police found a crack pipe in his pocket, according to court documents. He also told police that there was cocaine in his wallet. A plastic bag containing a gram of cocaine was later found in the backyard, according to court records.
Arellano told police he had bought the cocaine on the street because he wanted to try it out, according to court records.
Judge Robbin Stuckert set a no-cash bond for Arellano, who was to remain at the Dekalb County jail until he could be picked up by DuPage County sheriff’s deputies. Arellano is wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in court in DuPage County, and is also the subject of an immigration hold from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
If convicted of the most serious charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, Arellano could face up to three years in prison.
His next court date is 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
