1 injured after early morning Wilmington crash

3-car crash on I-55 near construction zone

One person was injured after a crash on northbound Interstate 55 in Wilmington early Thursday.

Illinois State Police responded to a crash about 6:25 a.m. near Lorenzo Road, Master Sgt. DeAnn Falat said.

A preliminary investigation reportedly showed Ramiz Ibraimi, 33, of Joliet, was driving a box truck north in the area when he failed to reduce speed and struck a Honda CRV that was stopped in traffic. The Honda then struck a semitrailer, Falat said.

A passenger in the Honda was taken to Morris Hospital, but ISP did not know the patient’s condition, Falat said. A photo of the crash showed the Honda suffered serious damage.

Ibraimi was cited for driving an uninsured motor vehicle, driving too fast for conditions and following too closely, Falat said.

The crash was just south of ongoing construction at Arsenal Road. In July, a 31-year-old truck driver died after a similar chain-reaction crash in the area.

“Just because it doesn’t look like there is a backup in the construction zone from a distance, it doesn’t mean that shortly down the road it will not become a dead-stop or stop-and-go traffic,” ISP wrote on Facebook. “There are numerous signs leading up to the construction zones, so please stay alert and be prepared to stop suddenly.”
