ROCKFORD – Velma Alberta Cain, 102, of Rockford, IL, formerly of Rock Falls, Sterling and Port Byron, IL, died October 19, 2019, at PA Peterson Home in Rockford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 2019, at the Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial at Cordova Cemetery.
Velma was born August 28, 1917, in Coe Township, Illinois, the daughter of Albert C. and Rosa May (Ashdown) Reiling. She graduated from Hillsdale High School as the Valedictorian in 1934. She married Lawrence Moody Cain in 1937 in Rock Island and was a homemaker in that area through the war time. After the war, they moved to Sterling, IL and continued raising their three children.
Velma enjoyed her family, gardening, church activities, camping, scouting, sewing, baking and traveling. She was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church and later the First United Methodist Church on Broadway in Sterling.
Velma is survived by her children, Larry (Cindy) Cain, Waterloo, IA, Janet (Don) Rowell, Roscoe, IL; son-in-law, David Brown, Elgin, IL; grandchildren, Cindy (Tim) Blazier, Cherie (Dennis) Markway, Betsy (Rich) Atkins, Ryan (Natasha) Rowell, Ross Cain and Rob Cain; and great-grandchildren, Zoe & Seth Blazier, Ximen & Saskia Markway, and Sydney & Isaac Atkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence “Brownie” Cain, daughter, Judith Ann Brown and brothers L. Kenneth Reiling and M. Blair Reiling.
