Coal City police release additional information on McDonald's bomb threat

A threat of a bomb called in to the McDonald’s in Coal City turned out to be a false alarm. But investigators are continuing to look into the event that shut down part of South Broadway on Tuesday.

The Coal City Police Department responded to the McDonald;s at 8:47 a.m. on Tuesday for a reported bomb threat at the restaurant.

Officers arrived on scene and were advised by workers that a telephone call was received at the building, with the caller indicating that a bomb was somewhere inside.

The Coal City Police Department and the Coal City Fire Protection District worked to evacuate the area due to the threat.

Broadway Street from Division to Carbon Street was closed for several hours, and people and vehicles in the area were relocated to areas deemed as safe.

The Kane County Bomb Squad was requested to check the building. Kane County Bomb Squad arrived on scene and determined that there was no bomb present. Broadway Street was reopened around 11 a.m., and McDonald’s continued business a short time later.

“The Coal City Police Department wishes to inform the public that this was an isolated incident at this business and no other incidents were reported within the village,” Coal City Sergeant Thomas Logan said in a press release issued Wednesday.

“The Coal City Police Department continues to investigate this incident and will release new information when available. The Coal City Police Department would like to thank Kane County Sheriff’s Department, Coal City Fire Department, Grundy County Sheriff’s Department. Coal City Auxiliary Police, and Grundy County EMA for their assistance on this call,” the release continued.
