Aidan Carlson returns home to continue recovery after brain injury

St. Charles North football player had been in hospital since Oct. 4 injury

ST. CHARLES – Aidan Carlson, the St. Charles North sophomore football player who suffered a serious brain injury on Oct. 4, has returned home from the hospital. Carlson's uncle Sean Peters posted the update on his Go Fund Me page on Wednesday.

"Today is a great day," Peters wrote in the post. "(Aidan) is out of the hospital and bound for home. He will continue his road to recovery from the comforts of his own room."

Peters wrote that Carlson still has a long way to go in his recovery, but the family is very excited that he was able to leave Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where underwent brain surgery after collapsing the locker room after the game at St. Charles East High School.

Carlson, 15, suffered a subdural hematoma, or bleeding on the brain. He underwent emergency brain surgery after being airlifted to Lutheran General. Peters said that Carlson, a running back and linebacker for the North Stars, played the entire game against St. Charles East "up until the last snap." After the game ended, he said Carlson mentioned that he was dizzy and began to vomit in the locker room, where he then collapsed and began having seizures. It was not clear at what point he suffered the injury during the game, Peters said.

Peters started a GoFundMe page Oct. 7 to raise funds for Carlson's family to help with his medical bills. By Oct. 8, it had raised nearly double the $10,000 goal in less than 24 hours. The page continues to raise funds to help Carlson's family pay for his medical bills and rehab. As of Thursday morning, it has generated more than $34,000.
