New restaurant, brewhouse coming to Elburn

ELBURN – The village of Elburn has made a few changes to its liquor license ordinance to accommodate two new bar/restaurant/brewhouses soon to open in town.

Elburn added a new category of liquor license, E-1, to accommodate the wishes of a high-end Mexican food restaurant called H OMG! Owners of the new restaurant, which will be located in the strip mall at 151 Route 38, where Brianna’s is located, didn’t want a full bar in the restaurant, but wanted to be able to serve margaritas at tables.

The E-1 category license is issued to restaurants without a bar. That will allow the sale and consumption of alcohol on-site only in conjunction with a meal.

A new Taco Bell opened in October in Elburn north of the Walgreens along Route 47 and north of Route 38. No liquor will be sold at that site.

The Village Board at its Nov. 4 meeting also cleaned up language in a newly created Class G liquor license to allow Obscurity, a brewhouse soon to open in Elburn, to sell craft beers other than the ones they will make on-site. Class G licenses cover brewpubs, distilleries, microbreweries and wineries.

Obscurity, which will be located at 113 W. North St., is being brought to Elburn by the owners of Lodi Tap House in Maple Park. Obscurity will serve beer, barbecue and craft mead, a type of wine made with honey.

The number of Class A liquor licenses, which allow for the sale of alcohol that will be served on-site or off-site, stands at five within the village. Bars with Class A licenses are Eddie Gaedel’s, Schmidt’s Towne Tap, Knuckleheads, Elsie’s and the Old Elburn Hall.

Revisions to village’s snow and ice guidelines addressed “just in time”

The village thought it was well ahead of the game recently when staff revised the village’s snow and ice guidelines outlining service delivery methods and approaches for snow plowing and ice control guidelines. As it turned out, the revisions came not a moment too soon with the first significant snowfall taking place on Halloween.

A parking ban on all village streets will be in effect anytime there is more than two inches of snow accumulation and will last for 24 hours after the end of the snowfall or when the snow and/or ice has been removed.

The village also may consider hiring part-time seasonal employees or outside contractors to assist with snow and ice control activities.

Public Works Superintendent Phil Van Bogaert said there are 35.2 centerline road miles maintained by the village of Elburn, which uses six separate routes (plus Anderson Road). Although salt will be used in the village, the guidelines state that it will be used as sparingly as possible because of the increasing amount of chloride in the surface and groundwater across northeastern Illinois. Road salt has been found to be the main culprit.

New schedule for village board

meetings starts next year

Beginning in the new year, the twice-monthly Elburn Village Board meetings will have a new start time of 7 p.m., as opposed to 6:45 p.m. The Committee of the Whole meetings will begin either at 7:15 p.m. or when the board meeting is done, whichever comes first.

The general consensus among board members was that given residents’ work schedules, the dinner hour and other considerations, the 7 p.m. time just seemed simpler and more convenient for individuals wishing to attend.
