Meyer had 10 kills and nine digs in a sectional semifinal win over Downers Grove South, seven kills and five digs in a regional final win over Maine South and seven kills and eight digs in a regional semifinal win over Leyden.
Meyer, a BYU recruit, talked to Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge about her team's postseason run, the season and more. Here is an edited version of the transcript.
Welge: What's the emotions of the team reaching a sectional final?
Meyer: Our team has been super focused in practice and we want it so bad. South hadn't won a regional since 2007 and we've been really pushing. We want to go to state this year and we're working hard every day to get there.
Welge: How has this year gone for you?
Meyer: It's been a little hard. I'm a setter, but I transitioned to outside hitter for school season. It was hard to learn the passing and the mentality. With the help of my teammates being so supportive, I learned how to work with them. I credit all my success to my teammates. They are great supportive people.
Welge: Had you played outside before?
Meyer: No, this is my first year. We lost two of our outsides from graduation, I talked to coach [Bill] Schreier and I told him wherever you need me to play, I'll play. The biggest thing was the mindset. I got stressed out in serve-receive. But with practice that mentality has changed. I got a lot of help from our libero, Darby Harris.
Welge: When did you commit to BYU?
Meyer: I committed last April. I went to camp when I was going into sophomore year and I fell in love with the campus. The coaches are amazing people. They offered me and I committed two days later. My brother is committed there as well as a setter. I wasn't expecting to go to the same school as him. He committed before me, but I was looking at the school for a while. It was my decision but it helped a little bit that he was going there. We are very close.
