BREAKING: Yorkville Middle School student charged with felony aggravated battery

YORKVILLE – A Yorkville Middle School student has been charged with aggravated battery after threatening a classmate using a pencil.

Yorkville Middle School administration were made aware by a teacher of the alleged incident at about 10:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. According to a news release from Yorkville School District 115 and Yorkville Police Department officials, an eighth-grade student threatened a classmate and made physical contact to the classmate with the pencil.

The classmate “had a slight scratch to the jaw area,” Deputy Police Chief Behr Pfizenmaier said.

The Thursday incident comes after another eighth grade student at Yorkville Middle School was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly threatening a classmate at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. Pfizenmaier said there is no indication currently that the two incidents are related.

“It’s just a very similar incident, unfortunately,” Pfizenmaier said.

The student was charged with aggravated battery, which is a felony, following the Thursday incident. Pfizenmaier said the student was not arrested and the charges are being made through the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office.

Pfizenmaier said he is unaware of what disciplinary actions occurred from the school administration side of things for the incidents on Wednesday and Thursday.

Nick Baughman, associate superintendent for learning and instruction for the district, declined comment on specific disciplinary actions taken on the students following the incidents. He said the district takes incidents like these seriously and conduct a thorough investigation with the help of police officials.

"It's handled in accordance with our policies in our handbook," Baughman said.

Pfizenmaier said he wants to impress on students that the police department and school district take incidents like these seriously and “there are consequences for acts of violence.”
