Channahon District 17 to refund property taxpayers

Channahon School District 17 recently announced that a budget surplus will result in property owners receiving a check in the mail by the end of the year.

The District 17 Board adopted a resolution at its Oct. 28 meeting, declaring the surplus of funds to be distributed to property owners within district boundaries, according to a news release.

The Will County Treasurer’s Office will provide the district with an updated list of property owners within its boundaries.

The district said that through the state’s new evidence-based funding formula and lower-than-budgeted expenses, some of the district’s funding concerns had been remedied. This made the disbursement possible.

The amount of each check has yet to be determined.

Still, the district said property tax owners can expect an amount close to or slightly less than the amount issued in December 2017, depending on the current value of their property.

The district also said in the release that its board “has been following legislation proposing to decrease school funding through proposed property tax freezes.”
