Troy school hosted camping-themed literacy night

Troy Cronin Elementary School in Shorewood recently held a camping-themed literacy night.

The event drew more than 400 students and families.

Features included a sensory book walk, campfire sing-a-longs, a readers’ theater, fishing for rhyming words and building words using an Osmo computer platform.

Clues in poems were used in a scavenger hunt to lead families to the next clue, and larger-than-life red dog Clifford also made an appearance.

Hallways and rooms were decorated with tents, camping chairs, bean bags, paper “campfires” and lanterns. Families ate hot dogs in the cafeteria for a break.

Literacy committee leaders of the event were Megan Janssen and Amy Deang.

Parents also went home with examples of games they could use to practice literacy skills with their children.

Every Troy Cronin student also went home with a book and a stuffed animal reading buddy.
