NIU Football: Devin Haney to transfer

DeKALB — Northern Illinois sophomore cornerback Devin Haney announced via Twitter that he has entered himself into the transfer portal.

"Now it's time to let God work. Respect my decision," Haney said in his post.

Haney provided a full statement as well, that read in part:

"I also want to thank both coaching staffs was under during my time here at Northern Illinois for everything they taught me on/off the field and for giving me a memory of a lifetime in winning a MAC Championship my freshman season."

A true sophomore who had started in six games, recorded 23 tackles, an interception against Akron and recorded a pass breakup. Huskies cornerback coach Aaron Wilkins was high on Haney back in spring practice, as was head coach Thomas Hammock.

"He's disciplined; he's a student of the game," Hammock said in April. "He studies the game. He knows the ins and outs of the position, and he knows how to play well. We're going to need him to step up and play."

According to Wilkins, Haney's size and patience were assets that gave Haney a lot of potential, as he pointed out in April.

“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s physical, and he’s long,” Wilkins said. “As crazy as this sounds, this may not necessarily be a skill-set that you’re thinking of, but that’s [being] patient. When I think patience is what makes a great corner, is the ability to kill someone slowly and make him make the first move and we react off of him. It’s kind of like a boxer.”

The Huskies are down cornerbacks Mark Aitken and Antwain Walker for the season due to injury, both of whom had started games.

Nick Rempert, a freshman from Batavia, announced he had entered the transfer portal on Nov. 8.

Linebackers Kyle Pugh and Lance Deveaux Jr., both of who are out for the season due to injury, have the potential to redshirt, with Pugh told the Daily Chronicle his intent was to come back and play again for the Huskies.
