South Elgin High School evacuated after threatening words found in classroom

Police, school district believe it was not a credible threat

SOUTH ELGIN – South Elgin High School was evacuated for about an hour Friday night after police officers conduct a sweep of the building following an incident involving some threatening words written on a classroom white board.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday, the department was notified of the incident by administrative staff at the high school, located at 760 E. Main St. in South Elgin, according to a news release from the South Elgin Police Department.

Based on the initial investigation, officers learned that there were several events going on Friday evening in various areas of the high school and as a precaution evacuated the school, the release stated. The Kane County Sheriff Office's K-9 explosive dog responded to conduct a protective sweep of the building and did not detect anything suspicious in nature, according to the release.

All personnel were evacuated for approximately one hour and the events proceeded to finish, the release stated. The South Elgin Police Department and School District U-46 have worked closely together on investigating this incident and believed the alleged writing on the white board was not a credible threat, but as a precaution took every step to ensure all personnel were safe inside the building, according to the release.
