Carroll board appoints Kloepping as new sheriff

MT. CARROLL – Carroll County recently swore in a new sheriff following Jeff Doran leaving the department to become chief of the Savanna Police Department.

Doran gave the County Board his resignation earlier this month, and Chief Deputy Ryan Kloepping was appointed to the post Nov. 21 to serve out Doran’s term, which expires in 2022.

Kloepping, of Mt. Carroll, joined the department as a dispatcher in 2002, became a corrections officer at the jail in 2005, served as a patrol deputy for 12 years, was promoted to detective and then chief deputy in 2018.

“I am honored that the county board has placed their trust in me and appointed me as Sheriff,” Kloepping said. “I pledge to always do what is best for Carroll County and all of you.”

Doran was sheriff for 17 years and left for the chief position to get better spousal health insurance. He replaces Chief Kevin Dimmick.

“I could not be more excited that Sheriff Doran will be coming on board to lead the Savanna Police Department,” Mayor Chris Lain said. “We could not have a more experienced and proven leader take the helm and move this department in the right direction.”

The City Council approved Doran’s appointment on Nov. 12, and he started work last week.

Doran always did what was best for Carroll County and cared for every person that called him with a concern or need, Kloepping said.

“Our entire department would like to thank Sheriff Doran for his dedication to Carroll County,” he said. “He has been a great role model, friend and boss to all of us.”
