Nanette 'Nan' Phillips named 2019 Batavia Citizen of the Year

BATAVIA – The Batavia Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that Nanette "Nan" Phillips has been named the 2019 Batavia Citizen of the Year. Phillips will be honored at the chamber's annual awards event on Jan. 23, according to a news release from the chamber.

The release stated that Mayor Jeffery Schielke described her as a positive, upbeat person with “a progressive-thinking mindset that benefits whatever organization she’s working with. She offers continual insights into how to do things successfully.”

Phillips spent more than 25 years as director of the Learning Resource Center at Louise White School in Batavia, and then at Hoover Wood School when it opened in 2001, before retiring in 2011. She also taught fifth grade at Louise White and at McCleery Elementary in Aurora.

She served on the Board of Directors of the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence and is a longtime member of the Batavia Woman's Club and volunteer with CHIP IN Batavia.

Nan and her husband, Ray, have lived in Batavia since 1986. They are the parents of three children, Jill Marsh, Todd Phillips and Lisa Cook, and grandparents of six boys and one girl.

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce also announced today that CHIP IN Batavia is this year’s recipient of the Spirit of Batavia Award. This is the fourth year the award is given to a group that has made significant contributions to the Batavia community, the release stated.
