Gunman accidentally killed coworker: cops

A man was killed in what appears to have been an accidental workplace shooting, police said.

Crest Hill police officers were called to a business on Raynor Avenue north of Elsie Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a man who had been shot in the chest, Police Chief Ed Clark said.

The wounded man was taken to AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he died, according to police.

Detectives were called to the scene of the shooting, which appeared to be inside an auto mechanic shop, Clark said.

“After conducting interviews and processing the scene, it was determined the shooting was isolated to and occurred inside the business. The subjects inside the building were friends or acquaintances,” police said in a statement.

“What came to light through interviews and investigation, was a reckless, tragic incident involving alcohol and firearms,” Clark said.

Detectives from the Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force assisted the Crest Hill police in the death investigation.

An employee of the business and co-worker of the man who was killed, 42-year-old Marius Januzis, 42, was taken into custody and booked into the Will County jail.

Jail showed Januzis living on Dinner Key Drive in Boca Raton, Florida.

The Will County States Attorney’s Office approved charges of Involuntary manslaughter, according to police.

Januzis’ bond was set at $500.000.
