John F. ‘Jack’ Munson

GRAND DETOUR – John F. “Jack” Munson, age 85, of Grand Detour, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, at Franklin Grove Living and Rehab Center.

He was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Tolono, IL the son of Ransom and Violet (Kirby) Munson.  Jack had owned and operated Munson’s General Store in Grand Detour from 1964 to 1986, and then worked at the Nash Recreational Center in Oregon for several years.

He was a veteran of the Army.

Jack married Nancy Jo Weitzel Oct. 19, 1957 in Dixon. She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 2015.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laurie Magnafici; and brother, Loren Munson.

Jack is survived by his children, Gregory Munson of Grand Detour, Karen Witmer of Polo and Janet Grobe of Byron; grandchildren, Lindsey Munson, Jamie Carlock, Jennifer Reuter, Jill Cochrane, Chad Reed, Zachary Grobe and Hannah Grobe; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marquita Butterbaugh of Mt Morris.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 20, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Brethren in Dixon with Pastor Blaine Minor officiating. Cremation will follow with burial of cremains at a later date at Grand Detour Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Church.

Memorials have been established to Franklin Grove Living and Rehab. Center and to St. Jude Children Hospital.
