Charles ‘Chuck’ Martin

Charles “Chuck” Martin, 90, of Oglesby, formerly of La Salle passed away with his family at his side at 3 p.m. on Dec. 20, 2019, in his residence.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23 in the Burgess Funeral Home in La Salle. A rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. A Grave-side services will be at a later date.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1929, in La Salle to Anton and Francis (Testa) Martin. He attended L-P High School, LPO Junior College and the University of Illinois.

He served his country through the branch of the Army in World War II and Korean War. He served in Seoul Korea in the 7th INF. Division Artillery.

He married Betty Jean Robinson on Oct. 20, 1951, in Rock Island.

He was employed by the City of La Salle Police Department from 1952 to 1978. He held the rank of lieutenant at the time of his retirement. He worked for L-P High School for 23 years as the Security/ Hearing Officer. He served on several boards throughout the community. They were; La Salle Civil Service Commission, La Salle Police Pension Board, 911 Oglesby Board, and the Task Force at L-P High School.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, and served as an usher. He coached basketball for several years at St. Hyacinth and St. Joseph Schools in La Salle. He was a lifetime member of the La Salle VFW #4668. He was a member of the St. Stephen’s Society. He was a member of the Chiefs of Police Association, Illinois Benevolent Association and the Illinois Police Association.

He is survived by one son, Thomas (Donna) Martin of La Salle; one daughter, Tami (Robert) Greenfield of Ottawa; four grandchildren, Christopher (Sarah) Martin of Oglesby, Curt (Jena) Martin of Oglesby, Shelby Hale of Peru, and Todd Hale of Mendota; four great-grandchildren, Aubrey Hale, Jerra, Clayton and Logan Martin; two step-grandchildren, Hannah and Ben Floyd; one step great grandson, Ayden Floyd; one brother, Junior Martin of Peoria; one sister, Carol (Jerry) Brady of Naperville; and his significant other, Sherry Lau.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2006; his son, Terrence, in 1990; his parents; one brother and one dsister.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for his favorite charities.
