As we close out the 2019 season at Friday Night Drive, we're counting down the top 10 games of the year.
Games were nominated by our staff and voted on by our editors. Without further ado, No. 2 on our list of the top 10 games of 2019: Boylan rallies to stun Sycamore in the Class 5A quarterfinals.
We've seen a lot of wild playoff games throughout the years, but this one might have been a first in state history.
Boylan, trailing 16-7 to start the fourth quarter, didn't run a single offensive play in the quarter but scored twice on fumble returns by linebacker Xavier Bryant to stun Sycamore, 19-16.
“Our defense played outstanding. And I thought our offense played outstanding,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said after the game. “But the turnovers, they pick them up and they take them for six. I’ve never seen it before, and I wish I wouldn’t have seen it today.”
In total, the Titans ran just nine plays in the second half – a trio of three-and-outs in the third quarter – and Sycamore outgained Boylan by 200 yards.
The Spartans still had a chance to at least force overtime, but Dayvion Foreman came through with a blocked field goal in the final seconds to send Boylan to the state semifinals.
