Feuerbach sets school rebounding record as Sycamore tops G-K

SYCAMORE – Senior Kylie Feuerbach continued to cement her claim as the best girls basketball player in Sycamore history in the Spartans’ 58-19 demolishing of the Genoa-Kingston Cogs.

Feuerbach broke the school record for rebounds in a career in the third quarter.

“It feels really cool,” Feuerbach said. “It just shows that all the hard work has paid off the last two years. I feel good. I’m really happy. The team, obviously, they always push me. I’m really thankful for it.”

She already had the career record for points, blocks, and is creeping up on the career steals lead, as well.

“I’m just proud of her,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “She works tremendously hard. The skills that she has you don’t see come around very often. That’s a once in a generation type kid.”

Feuerbach also led all scorers with 16 points, despite not playing for the entire fourth quarter with the game already in hand.

The Spartans (11-6) controlled both ends of the court from the opening tip.

On defense, the Spartans blanketed the Cogs, allowing only two points in the first quarter and six total in the half.

“It makes me smile, obviously,” Wickness said. “That’s kind of what we want. We talk about how we have to develop an identity on the defensive end of the floor.”

Sycamore had more steals, four, in the first quarter than the Cogs had points, two.

“It’s tough when our starting post is as big as some of their guards,” Cogs coach Brendan Royalty said. “It’s a challenge for us.”

The Spartan defense flowed seamlessly into their offense.

The Spartans turned their steals into fast break layups and executed their offense to get open looks that they converted, especially from behind the arc.

The Spartans hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers in the first and third quarters, draining nine total for the game.

By the numbers: For Sycamore, Faith Feuerbach had 13 points and Faith Klemm had eight points. For the Cogs, Lilly McPherson led the team with eight points.

Beyond the stats: Eight of the nine players who saw the floor scored for the Spartans, including 17 combined points from bench players Ari Galto, seven, Evyn Carrier, six, and Karli Kruizenga, four.

They said it: "Everybody on the team is good," Kylie Feuerbach said. "When they all show it on the court it's really good because everyone deserves to get their game shown."

Up next: Sycamore travels to Morris on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Cogs play at Mendota on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
