High school sports roundup for Tuesday, Jan. 7

Sophomore Matt Volkening scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in overtime as Marengo defeated Stillman Valley, 51-45, in a nonconference game Tuesday.

The Indians (12-2) were tied with the Cardinals at 36-36 to end regulation. Volkening hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game early in overtime, then added a 2-point field goal, a 3-point play and two more free throws.

Mitch Kunde hit 3 of 4 free throws in overtime for Marengo. Jonah Pace scored 10 points for the Indians.

Woodstock North 68, Byron 49: At Woodstock, Cole Brey hit six 3s and scored 20 points as the Thunder (8-5) defeated the Tigers in their nonconference game.

Joe Chase scored 18 points and hit two 3s for North. Rex White added 10 points, while Elijah Pena and Austin Zieman each scored nine.

Johnsburg 68, Marian Central 53: At Woodstock, Joey Comstock led the Skyhawks (5-8) with 19 points in their nonconference win over the Hurricanes (2-12).

Josh Notriano hit three of Johnsburg’s four 3s and finished with 18 points. Stan Thill added 15.

Marian’s Ben Moscinski led all players with 20 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Woodstock 45, North Chicago 30: At North Chicago, Erin Lockwood scored 19 of her game-high 31 points in the second half as the Blue Streaks (6-10) defeated the Warhawks in a nonconference game.

Woodstock led, 21-16, at halftime. Lockwood had all but five of the Streaks’ second-half points.

Huntley 50, Crystal Lake Central 16: At Huntley, Carley Faulkner scored 17 points as the Red Raiders (8-8, 4-3) defeated the Tigers (4-12, 1-5) in their FVC game.

Kamsi Nwogu added 14 for the Raiders.

Paige Keller scored 10 points, all in the second half, with three 3s. Nora Ryan scored Central’s six first-half points.

Harvard 44, Round Lake 35: At Harvard, Lindsey Shafer scored 12 points, and Lauren Shafer added 10 as the Hornets (9-8) defeated the Panthers in a nonconference game.

Haily Hill and Jade Bailey each scored seven for Harvard.

Prairie Ridge 46, Jacobs 38: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves (7-9, 2-5) held on for an FVC win over Jacobs (4-11, 1-5).

WRESTLING

Woodstock double dual: Marengo won a pair of dual meets, edging Woodstock, 36-33, then beating Boylan, 54-17. Woodstock beat Boylan, 55-15.

Jake Doyle (138 pounds), Eddie Solis (182), Michael Macias (220) and Dan Chicoine (285) had pins for the Indians against Woodstock. Ethan Struck (106), Logan Miller (113) and Joe Resendez (120) won by decisions.

Marengo beat Boylan, 54-17. Doyle won by a pin, while Miller, Struck, Resendez, Solis, Macias and Chicoine also went 2-0 for the night.

Woodstock picked up wins against Marengo from Max Hodory (126), Cooper Adams (145), Alex Zange (160) and Jerrod Grell (195) by pins. Alex Iverson (132) won by decision.

Against Boylan, Zange won by a pin, while Iverson and Sciame won by decisions.

Hampshire 54, Byron 21: At the Belvidere Triangular, Hampshire recorded seven pins in a win over Byron. Logan Witt (106), Kaloyan Nikolov (113), Niko Skoulikaris (132), Tyler Boyd (138), Camden Smith (145), Nathan Larson (152) and Dylan Mejdrich (160) each won by pin.

Palmer Larson (126) and Emanuel Montenegro (182) each won by decision. Anthony Marlett (120) won by forfeit.

Harvard 59, Oregon 9: At Oregon, five Hornets wrestlers won by pin in a nonconference victory. Sebastian Esquivel (126), Devin Van Deveer (152), Bailey Livdahl (160), Ivan Hernandez (220) and Luis Roman (285) all won by fall.

Brian Hernandez (106), Damyan Michel (145) and Nathan Rosas (195) won by decision. Ivan Rosas (120) and Brett Lovell (138) won by major decision. Bryce Fiegel (113) and Nik Jimenez (132) won by forfeit.

GIRLS BOWLING

Huntley 2,574, Dundee-Crown 1,869: At Bowl-Hi Lanes in Huntley, Jen Spielman led Huntley with a 607 series in a win over D-C. Abby Matula bowled a 521 series, and had the Red Raiders' high game with a 220.

Gen Porsche rolled a 495 series, and Cassie Lugo added a 491.

D-C’s Lizbeth Perez bowled a team-high 460 series with a 169 high game. Marcelina Wasilewski added a 388 series, and Claudia Hernandez had a 373 series.

Marengo 2,634, Johnsburg 2,347: At Raymond's Bowl in Johnsburg, Olivia Pribyl rolled a 480 series to lead the Indians to the victory.

Dani Hartmann had a 479 and Grace Wzienteck had a 463.

BOYS BOWLING

Marengo 3,247, Johnsburg 3,005: At Raymond's Bowl in Johnsburg, J Mortimer rolled a 622 series and a 237 high game to lead the Indians past the Skyhawks.

Tim Scholl added a 599 series with games of 202 and 201. Kyle Peters added a 545 series (with a 203 game) and Chase Vogt had a 540 series (with a 214).

Evan Halverson led Johnsburg with a 578 series and a high game of 220. Landon Banaszynski rolled a 549 (with a 236) and Blake Radtke had a 542 (with a 201).

BOYS SWIMMING

Cary-Grove co-op 114, Jacobs co-op 56: At Crystal Lake's Sage YMCA, Peyton Richardson and Ben Castro won two indiviual events and swam on two winning relays as the Trojans defeated the Eagles in their dual meet.

Richardson won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Castro won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. They teamed with Mike Bartczyszyn and Cole Seeger to win the 200 medley relay, and with Bartczyszyn and Noah Siegmeier to win the 400 freestyle relay.

C-G also got a win from Siegmeier, Kameron Fadden, Hunter Pearson and Danny Sanahurskyj in the 200 freestyle relay.

Jacobs got victories from Vince Chiapetta in the 200 and 500 freestyles, and from Nate Herrera in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
