Name: Sam Greco
School: Marmion, junior
Sport: Hockey
Why he was selected: Greco scored all four goals in Marmion's 4-3 win over Carmel. Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson caught up with Greco to discuss the hockey season. Below is an edited transcript.
Bartelson: Why is hockey so important to you?
Greco: Hockey has been a game I have loved to play since the first time I skated. I enjoy the competition, and it allows me to compete alongside my teammates. I have been fortunate to make many new friends along the way, and have gotten to travel all over the country. I have been lucky to represent Marmion Academy.
Bartelson: I have to assume you're [Marmion grad] Nick's brother, right? If so, how has he influenced you as a hockey player growing up?
Greco: Hockey has allowed me to play with my older brother, Nick, and my younger brother, Michael. Nick was a great role model because he is the most hardworking and disciplined person I know. It was special to have been able to win a state championship with him my freshman year. He truly did impact me as he helped form the player I am today.
Bartelson: How early did you start playing?
Greco: Our backyard froze over and me and my two brothers went to Play It Again Sports for used skates to play for the first time. I was 5. From there, I knew I wanted to take my game to the next level.
Bartelson: Was that the first four-goal game of your varsity career? How special of a feeling was that night for you?
Greco: Yes, it was my first four-goal game of my varsity career. The four goals felt great, but the better feeling was winning the game with my teammates. I am lucky because I have great teammates that can really move the puck helping me to score.
Bartelson: Who is your favorite hockey player and why?
Greco: My favorite hockey player is TJ Oshie because of his [2014] performance in the Olympics versus Russia. He put on a show during the shootout leading USA to the win.
