Male Most Valuable Athlete: Sean Kavanaugh

Name: Sean Kavanaugh

School: Marmion, sophomore

Sport: Basketball

Why he was selected: Kavanaugh had 22 points and six rebounds in a loss to Yorkville Christian. Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson caught up with Kavanaugh to discuss his career at Marmion. Below is an edited transcript.

Bartelson: What's your background with basketball?

Kavanaugh: I have played basketball since I was in second grade for the Storm rec league. In seventh grade, I started to play travel and that’s where I started to love the sport. Now I play for M14 in Aurora and I’m loving it.

Bartelson: Why is it important to you?

Kavanaugh: Basketball is important to me because it helps me not worry and stress about other items in my life. Not only does it help my outside life, it helps with my school and makes me really focus on my work.

Bartelson: What has this season taught you about yourself as a player?

Kavanaugh: This season has taught me as a young player that no matter how young you are, you can still go out and prove yourself every night. Also, I have learned that if you are willing to put in the extra work, you will see results.

Bartelson: How has attending Marmion affected you as a young man?

Kavanaugh: Attending Marmion has affected me as a young man because I am able every day to go into a classroom with 25 other boys that I know well, and am able to express myself. I am really starting to see the 'brotherhood' in this special school, and I really enjoy being a Cadet.

Bartelson: Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?

Kavanaugh: My favorite professional athlete is [Portland Trail Blazers guard] Damian Lillard. This is because it shouldn’t matter about your height. He is still willing to go out every night and show that he is one of the greatest. He also went to a small Division I school in Weber State and was still able to get on the biggest stage, the NBA.
