Providence standout Geers finds his right fit at Minnesota

Patience might be a virtue.

But in this case, Providence Catholic tight end Jameson Geers can be forgiven for taking a pass in displaying it in this instance.

As such, Geers recently made a verbal commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Minnesota.

"I went up to Minnesota for like a three-day trip and found my fit. I had a great time and I got to talk to the coaches for a while. And I got to talk to some of the players and it was a great experience overall. I felt like the time was right," Geers said. "I couldn't wait any longer when I got home, called them up on Wednesday and I told them I wanted to commit."

It was a breakthrough for the Minnesota program last season as the Golden Gophers went 11-2 and finished No. 10 in the final Associated Press poll. Geers admitted that the currently thriving program did have an effect on his decision.

"The culture there is just unbelievable they have such a great program," Geers said. "I have a great relationship with all the coaches they are just a program that I believe will get the best out of me and I'll be the best person I can be as well."

Providence has now formed a bit of a pipeline to the Golden Gopher program. When Geers arrives, he'll be joined by current Minnesota linebacker and Celtic alum Mariano Sori-Marin, who just completed his sophomore season.

Even when things went a bit awry for Geers in his junior season when he broke the scaphoid bone in his left wrist during the season and required surgery in mid-November, Minnesota's interest in Geers didn't waver in the slightest.

Geers played the final two games of the season in a cast and is currently still in a brace after having the cast removed. He's hoping to get clearance to rejoin the basketball team in time for Providence's postseason.

The injury has hindered Geers' training schedule a bit, but he knows that wait is mercifully almost over.

"It was my first surgery, it was tough, but I'm glad that's it almost over," Geers said. "I've been really itching to get back to it. I really catch a lot of footballs right now, but once I get the brace off I should be able to get right back to it."

Providence coach Mark Coglianese believes Geers will be a factor for the Gophers sooner rather than later.

"I think its a great fit. Jameson is a little on the quiet side but I think he really enjoyed some of the enthusiasm and intensity that coach Fleck brings," Coglianese said. "He really blew up over the summer with some of the camps that he went to and some of the schools started to realize with the size that he has, he's got a great frame, he runs well and he's got great hands. Even though he didn't have great numbers with us as a sophomore and even this past season with the broken wrist, I think that teams realize that he has a ton of upside. There's a lot you can do with a guy his size and with his skills."
