BRIEFS: Bromenschenkel sets record in Mendota win

Mendota junior Amellia Bromenschenkel scored 34 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, swiped five steals and blocked a pair of shots to lead the Mendota girls basketball team to a 55-41 victory over Streator in a non-conference game Saturday in Mendota.

Bromenschenkel set the school’s single-season scoring record in the game. She has 723 points this season, eclipsing the old mark of 691 set by Sammy Kromm in 2000-01.

Jenna O’Donnell added seven points and five assists for the Lady Trojans (19-9).

L-P swimming co-op ties for second

Joe Ovanic won a pair of individual events Saturday to help the La Salle-Peru boys swimming co-op to a tie for second place at the Sterling Invitational.

The Cavaliers and Sterling each finished with 424 points. Lincoln-Way East (461) won.

Ovanic won the 100-yard butterfly (53.01 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (55.46). He was named the Most Valuable Swimmer.

Seneca sweeps St. Bede in hoops

Paul Hart scored 19 points Saturday as the St. Bede boy basketball team lost 51-41 to Seneca in a non-conference game in Peru. Gunnar Jauch added 11 points for the Bruins.

In the girls game, Seneca beat St. Bede 40-33.

Princeton girls lose to Kewanee

Kenzie Coleman had 20 points, six assists and four rebounds Saturday as the Princeton girls basketball team lost 53-45 to Kewanee in a Three Rivers Conference East Division game in Princeton.

Mckenzie Hecht added 13 points for PHS.

L-P girls lose to Kaneland

The La Salle-Peru girls basketball team lost 58-40 to Kaneland in an Interstate Eight Conference game Saturday in Maple Park.

Putnam County girls fall to Wethersfield

The Putnam County girls basketball team fell 46-34 to Wethersfield in a non-conference game Saturday in Granville.

MHS boys lose to Dixon

The Mendota boys basketball team lost 63-38 to Dixon in a Big Northern Conference game Saturday in Mendota.

IVCC women lose

The IVCC women’s basketball team lost 60-58 to Kennedy-King in a non-conference game Saturday. The Lady Eagles are 7-11.

Fundraiser set for PHS-BV game

The Princeton FFA Alumni will host a pork chop and pork burger stand at the Princeton vs. Bureau Valley basketball game Feb. 14 in the cafeteria at Princeton High School. The stand will open at 5:30 p.m. and run until the end of the game. Proceeds will go toward scholarships to be used by Princeton FFA members.
