Princeton Police Department recognized for fundraising efforts

PRINCETON — At a recent Special Olympics Illinois conference, the Princeton Police Department was recognized as top fundraiser for a first-year department.

Police Chief Tom Kammerer shared the good news during Monday's city council meeting. He explained that last year was his department's first year raising money for the organization.

He said the state overall raised $5.2 million last year and set this year's goal for $5.5 million.

Princeton Police will work toward raising $10,000 of that goal. Officers plan to take part in the annual Polar Plunge event in Mendota on Feb. 29. The department will also host a Euchre tournament on March 15 at the Princeton Moose Lodge.

Donations are also currently being accepted at the police station and online at www.plungeillinois.com. T-shirts can also be purchased at the department for the cause.

On Monday, Kammerer was accompanied at the council podium with a local Special Olympics competitor, Noah Bacorn of Princeton. Kammerer said his department takes part in this fundraiser for athletes like Bacorn.

"We're really proud to be able to do that for Noah. Something we have a lot of pride in — helping out athletes like Noah and there are a lot of others in town that compete. We're bringing attention to it and will be accepting donations," he said.
