Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries Monday after a three-vehicle crash involving a McHenry police squad car.

An officer with the McHenry Police Department was responding at 3:48 p.m. Monday to an emergency call when the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado crashed into a truck on the side of the road, and then into the police vehicle, according to a news release from the McHenry police department.

The crash occurred on Front Street just south of the intersection at Elm Street in McHenry, according to the release.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling south on Front Street when it first struck a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck that had pulled over to yield to the police vehicle, according to the release.

The Chevrolet then struck the police vehicle, a 2013 Ford Interceptor which had its emergency lights and sirens activated at the time of the crash, according to the release.

The driver of the Chevrolet and the police officer were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. There were no passengers in any of the vehicles.

The area of Front Street between Elm and Main streets was closed until about 4:40 p.m. while police responded to the crash, which remained under investigation Monday evening.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact the McHenry Police Department at 815-363-2200. Anonymous tips can be called into the McHenry Police Tip line at 815-363-2124.
