Donald Anderson

Donald G. Anderson, 89, a recent resident of the Illinois Veterans Home at La Salle passed away Feb. 5, 2020, at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley.

A memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 22 in Com-munity Congregational Church, 410 S. Cornell Avenue, Villa Park. Pastors Sue Detterman (of Community Congregational Church) and Jon Graham (of Spring Valley United Church of Christ) will officiate. A luncheon will follow in Stiffler Hall.

Don was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Chicago, son of Gustav and Elsa (Pettersson) Anderson, both of whom emigrated from Sweden. He grew up in Chicago and lived almost all his life there and in the Villa Park and Elmhurst area.

He attended Hyde Park High School, where he met his beloved Lita Alcivar. They were married Sept. 1, 1951, after which Don was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with distinction. He was a draftsman by trade and then worked at the Villa Park Bank after his “retirement.” He was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ, both in Chicago and Villa Park. He was very active in his churches, serving in various capacities, such as Sunday school teacher, youth leader, moderator, liturgist, financial secretary and technical support. His passion, though, was recording and listening to old radio shows from the ‘30s and ‘40s. He recorded and collected well over 2,000 cassette tapes.

He is survived by his daughters, Sue (Jon) Graham of DePue and Barb (Ken) Innis of Bolingbrook; grandchildren Sarah, Anne, Tim, Peter, James, and Jessica; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Don was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife Lita; his sister Dorothy and her husband Bob; and a nephew Bobby.
