Leonard C. Turner Sr.

ROCKFORD – Leonard C. Turner Sr., age 90, of Rockford, formerly of Dixon, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2020 at Cherryvale Place in Rockford.

Leonard was born July 5, 1929 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Coker and Pearl (Gladwin) Turner.

He served in the US Marines and later married Gladys Schoenherr on October 14, 1950. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2019. Leonard was employed as a conductor for Chicago Northwest Railroad for 42 years.

He is survived by four daughters, Brenda (Anthony) Caruana, Heidi (Kevin) Oltmanns, Gail Witmer Turner and Tammy (Gwynne Roberts) Turner; three sons, Leonard, Jr. (Brenda) Turner, Wayne (Mary) Turner and Steve (Sue) Turner; one daughter-in-law, Mary Saunders; one sister, Peggy Salvato; one brother, Lester (Ruby) Turner; thirteen grandchildren, Tracey, Amy, Matthew, Kim, Elizabeth, Noelle, Nicole, Michele, Andrew, Jerod, Jordan, Amber and Zach; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Alicia, Noah, Caleb, Paxton, Hagan, Andy, Jon, Jacob, Dylan, Althea, Lily and Rielynn.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, Lawrence Turner and Lyle Turner; and three sisters, Dixie Daniel, Phoebe Brown and Edna Michaelson.

Visitation will be Monday, February 24, 2020 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Thomas Doyle of St. Anne Catholic Church in Dixon officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.
