LINCOLNSHIRE – Woodstock North co-op junior Quinn Cynor pounded his chest until it was red and let out the first of many screams before the first event of the Stevenson Boys Swimming Sectional on Saturday.
Cynor, who attends Woodstock, was ready for a big day.
The junior finished first and set pool records in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke. Cynor also helped North co-op's 200 medley relay team qualify for next weekend's state meet at Evanston Township High School.
Cynor, who is a state qualifier for the third straight season, swam the 100 backstroke in 49.53 seconds and broke six-time Olympic medalist and 2003 Lake Forest graduate Matt Grevers' previous pool record of 50.57.
Cynor's 200 free time of 1:37.90 beat the pool record of 1:40.48 and would have been good for second place at state last year.
The personal-best times were even a little surprising for Cynor, who will taper and shave for state.
"I did not think I would go that fast today," Cynor said. "I thought next week I would go that fast, definitely not today. It was a huge shock, and I couldn't be happier."
Cynor placed sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 200 free and 100 backstroke at state last year, becoming the program's first state medalist since Brenden Dougherty and Brian Spittler in 2006.
North co-op's 200 medley relay of Cynor, Gunner Dunnett, Nick Phillips and Aidan Teuber broke the team record with a 1:37.01, placing fifth, and will swim at state. They beat the state-qualifying time by three one-hundredths of a second.
North co-op coach Ian Shanahan said it has been "at least 15 years" since the team sent a relay.
"Every year, the times get harder and harder," Phillips said. "This year we were going to go after it, and we got it. Finally."
Cary-Grove co-op's 200 medley relay of Ben Castro, Cole Seeger, Peyton Richardson and Michael Bartczyszyn took fourth in the 200 medley (1:36.90) to qualify. C-G has advanced the 200 medley three straight years.
Richardson also qualified in the 200 individual medley (1:55.59) and 100 butterfly (51.31). Castro placed third in the 100 butterfly (50.87) to advance and is going to state for the second year in a row.
Richardson, a senior, said Castro, a sophomore, has been a big source of motivation.
"It's a friendly competition," Richardson said. "I know I enjoy it. I'm assuming he enjoys it. I've never really told him before, but he pushes me in that fly, and it's helped me become who I am in the fly. Him being next to me helped me get that cut."
Jacobs co-op junior Vince Chiappetta will head back to state in the 500 free, and teammate Alec Orndahl will make his state debut after qualifying in the 200 IM (1:56.49) and 100 butterfly (52.03).
Chiappetta was the sectional champion in the 500 free with a time of 4:38.80. That beat his personal best by about "4 or 5 seconds," he said.
"I felt very good, very strong," Chiappetta said. "I couldn't believe it at first. I was like, 'Oh my God, did I just go that time?' I was kind of speechless. It was all mixed emotions, just happy and excited.
"I want to make it to the finals. Hopefully, with that time, it will seed me pretty good."
Orndahl, a senior, was thrilled to move on.
"It feels great," Orndahl said. "It's so satisfying having all of the hours pay off at this one big meet. I was just in shock at first. I was overcome with an immense joy. It paid off finally."
