The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office respond to a call at the Wilsons’ home at 16058 Old State Road just before 6 p.m. Aug. 15 and begin their investigation. The DeKalb County Major Case Squad was activated at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 15, 2016.
On Aug. 24, 2016 the Wilsons’ white Impala was located by Chicago police on North Stockton near the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. After police observed the vehicle for some time to see if anyone returned to it, it was seized.
In June of 2017 police announced that the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction had grown to $50,000.

In August of 2019 a profile was released using DNA found at the crime scene by Parabon NanoLabs which specializes in DNA phenotyping that approximated the appearance as well as certain genetic probabilities such as hair, eye, and skin color.
Feb. 25, 2020 the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office announces the arrest of Jonathan D. Hurst on charges of two counts of first degree murder in the killing of Patricia and Robert Wilson of Sycamore.
