Can’t beat the brunch at trendy Spoons

Main Street eatery simply ‘egg’-cellent

Nothing beats a good brunch. Fluffy three-egg omelets. Crispy hash browns. Sizzling sausage. That full-belly-feeling that lasts all day.

Princeton’s trendy Main Street restaurant, Spoons, rolled out a brunch menu last year, and I had been hearing nothing but good things ever since.

So I set out one Sunday morning to see what all the rave was about and to experience their popular Bloody Mary bar for myself.

How does it work? You order a Bloody Mary and the waitress brings a glass of ice and vodka. You’re then instructed to help yourself at the bar, which is where you’ll find trays full of cheese, pickles, olives, asparagus, pepperoncinis and mini meat sticks, along with celery salt, pepper, hot sauce bottles and two glass pitchers — one filled with tomato juice, the other with a house mix.

I went with the house mix, which (beware) has a kick to it, and I loaded up toothpicks with toppings until my heart was content. It felt like the perfect Bloody Mary, because, well, I made it myself.

The brunch menu offers 12 meal options, along with two desserts, plus sides and extras.

I ordered the Indian Scramble ($7.75), which is four eggs scrambled with tomato, onion, garlic, jalapeno and spices served up with naan bread. If you like spice with your eggs, you’ll love this dish, and the naan bread compliments the dish quite nicely.

I dined with two other friends. One ordered the Mexican hash ($8.50), a chorizo, potato, onion, green pepper scramble topped with Mexican queso and a two-egg omelet. The hash comes with a tortilla if you wish to eat it like a breakfast burrito. My friend gave it two thumbs up.

My other friend went for plain and simple, two eggs scrambled with hash browns and white toast ($5). It was cheap and easy, and he cleaned the plate of fluffy eggs and jellied toast and said he was “satisfied.”

We left enough room to split the Kouign Amann ($5), which is a warm Breton cake topped with salted caramel toffee ice cream. I savored every bite and caught myself scraping up the caramel drizzle left on the plate. My advice: save room for dessert.

To sum it up, the brunch at Spoons is “egg”-cellent, and I’ll guarantee you’ll be bac(on) for more. I give my experience five stars, based on the food and super friendly wait staff who serve with a smile.
