DeKALB – Golden Tickets aren’t necessary to attend Children’s Community Theatre’s production of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka.”
Performances of “Willy Wonka” will be at O’Connell Theatre in Northern Illinois University’s Stevens Building at 7 p.m. March 6, 7 and 13 and 2 p.m. March 8 and 14.
“Willy Wonka” will be CCT’s first family show in four years, featuring both children and adult actors. The show has about 63 cast members ages 7 to 70.
“Our family shows are a great opportunity for families to perform on stage together,” Director Lynnae Ihm said. “Most adults have kids in the show.”
Auditions for the musical took place in December and the cast has been rehearsing since Jan. 6.
“We’re just really excited to perform the fun, whimsical musical with lots of dancing and singing,” Ihm said. “The cast has worked really hard, and it’s great to show all the talent there is in DeKalb County.”
Ihm said the musical closely follows Roald Dahl’s book and that Willy Wonka is closer to Gene Wilder’s portrayal of the character than Johnny Depp’s.
“I think the musical follows the book and the 1971 film pretty closely: there are Oompa Loompa songs, golden tickets and a pink candy boat,” Ihm said. “I think the musical will appeal to all ages. Most people are familiar with the story. Young kids will love the bright colors and decorations, children reading the book will love the story and adults will appreciate the meaning of generosity and being truthful.”
Tickets can be purchased at the door with cash or check only. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $6 for children age 12 and younger and children age 2 and younger can watch free as a lap viewer.
